How the Community Forum Works

Welcome to Spina Bifida Naturally!

We’re so glad you’re here.

We wanted to take a minute to explain how the community forum works.

When you create a new post using the big orange button located on the right sidebar of this page, it will always appear at the top of the community forum page directly under this post. But it will also appear on all the category pages that you select when submitting your post. Please select as many categories as apply to the content of your post. This allows visitors to browse through the “Posts By Category” links found on the right sidebar, making information easier to find.

But there are two categories that work a little differently:

Spina Bifida News – if you check this category, your post will appear in the community forum, just like normal, but it will also appear on the main menu “SPINA BIFIDA NEWS” page of the website. Please reserve this category strictly for news articles. When you find an interesting news article, you can select “Spina Bifida News,” but you can also select as many other categories as apply to the content of the article.

Our Kids Stories – if you check this category, your post will appear in the community forum, just like normal, but it will also appear on the “OUR KIDS STORIES” page of the website. Please reserve this category strictly for the story you write about yourself or your child with Spina Bifida. But if you have a link to an encouraging story or news article about someone else, please select the “Encouraging Stories” category. We want to reserve the “Our Kids Stories” section to personal stories written by our members.

Add Media – One other tip I thought would be helpful for those not familiar with HTML is to explain how to edit the code for the images you insert into posts.  But first let me explain how to add a photo to your posts.  When you want to insert a photo in your post, go to the location where you want the photo to appear, then click the Add Media button, choose the Upload Media tab, click the Select Files button, then browse your computer, select the photo and click Open.  Then wait for the photo to load in the upper left corner and then click the blue Insert Into Post button at the bottom of the page.

Ok, now your picture appears, but it’s not really embedded into the text.  It’s just sitting in the middle of the page.  This is an easy fix.  There are two tabs in the upper right corner of your text window, select the “Text” tab.  Now scroll down until you see a bunch of code where your picture should be.  It should look something like this:

<a href=”http://spinabifidanaturally.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/samplepicture.jpg”><img class=”alignnone size-medium wp-image-1420″ src=”http://spinabifidanaturally.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/samplepicture-300×200.jpg” alt=”samplepicture” width=”300″ height=”200″ /></a>

Don’t worry, you don’t need to understand any of this code.  You just need to change one word.  Find the word alignnone.  This means that your picture is not set to line up with the text.  But if you change it to alignright or alignleft, it will align your picture in either direction and then wrap your text around it.  Don’t change anything else.  Leave the quotation mark in front of it without any spaces between it.  Just change the letters “none” to the letters “right” or “left”.  Voila!
